    The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) recently released two European Standards and a technical specification to which the JRC contributed through the provision of reference materials (RMs). The RMs were used for validation of three analytical methods developed under CEN mandate M/424 in CEN/TC230, supporting the Water Framework Directive.

    The latest MARS crop monitoring Bulletin, published today, reports that the significantly higher-than-average temperatures experienced by much of central, eastern and northern Europe since the end of November has helped winter crops to become established, but has also impeded their build-up of frost tolerance, leaving them exposed to frost kill should temperatures suddenly turn to normal seasonal values.

    Storm Desmond, an active European windstorm, brought strong winds and heavy rain to Ireland and the UK over the past weekend, causing severe flooding, disruption and three reported fatalities. The European Flood Awareness System (EFAS), which is part of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS), sent flood warnings from 1 December 2015 onwards, indicating a high potential of severe flooding in the UK and Ireland for the weekend 5-6 December 2015.
